The original von Germann watercolors, some 22
in all, were created between 1777-1782 by Captain Friedrich Konstantin von
Germann. He served with the Hessen-Hanau Regiment Erbprinz, which
surrendered at Saratoga with Burgoyne's army in October 1777. These
watercolors depict the uniforms and accoutrements of several British and German
regiments and other associated figures he made contact with during the
campaign, Captain von Germann created the original watercolors from
personal knowledge and observations of the subjects, most likely while he was a
prisoner of war with the Convention Army. In 1852, contemporary
artists prepared faithful copies for the Braunschweig archives in Germany and returned the originals to their
owner. Volume I contains the British
Regiments - 20th, 21st, 24th, 33rd, 47th, and 62nd Regiments of Foot plus the
Royal Highland Emigrants, Royal Artillery, British Soldier in Winter Dress along
with the American Officer and American (enlisted) Soldier. Volume II
contains German regiments - Braunschweig Regiments Prinz Friedrick, von Specht,
Riedesel, Rhetz along with the Braunschweig Jager Corps, Light Infantry
Battalion
and Dragoon Regiment with the Hessen-Hanau Regiment Erbprinz, Jager Corps,
German Artillery and French Canadian Farmer. All 22 of the archived
3 x 5 watercolors have been painstakingly reproduced on very high quality acid free
art stock. They have been upsized to an 8 x 10 format to enhance detail and provide
prints suitable for framing,
reference or research. A vital addition to the period historical
community.

period images of her family and acquaintances
like Hetty Cary, Virginia Pegram, Mary Triplet, Generals Hood, McCulloch,
Beauregard and Johnston. Louise
Wigfall Wright's recollections of the Civil War rank among the
most notable Southern memoirs ever published. Her father's status
as a Senator led to contacts with several distinguished political and military
figures that served the Confederacy during the war. Her family letters
reveal much personal insight and changing perspectives on the war as time
frayed hopes for survival of the Confederacy. Life in war-time Richmond
and Atlanta, letters from southern belles and soldiers, the suffering in
the South and the collapse of the Confederacy are addressed in her memoirs.
She has included over 32 period images of her family and acquaintances like
Hetty Cary, Virginia Pegram, Mary Triplet, Generals Hood, McCulloch,
Beauregard and Johnston.

First translated into English and published in 1827, the original translation of
the Letters and Journals
of Baroness von Riedesel were short some 40 pages. William L. Stone
re-translated the her letters and journals from German in the mid 1860's.
They were published by Joel Munsell, Albany, NY in 1867. This
publication is a facsimile reprint of that work with an introduction by
Elizabeth Ellet, extracted from her renowned work, Women of the American
Revolution, which she authored in 1848. The Baroness came to America in 1777 with her three
children to be with her husband while her served under General Burgoyne.
Not uncommon then, she accompanied her husband during the Burgoyne campaign,
the surrender at Saratoga and with the Convention Army until he was exchanged
in 1780. She and her family returned to Canada and thence to Germany in
1783. These letters and journals chronicle her personal trials and
tribulations, recording her experiences in American during the Revolution.
